Harry's New York Bar opens in Cannes
The famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris is opening a new location in Cannes on Friday, 11 June, bringing a legendary bar to a legendary town!
Europe's oldest cocktail bar, Harry's New York Bar, is a legendary spot in Paris, not only for inventing some of our favourite drinks, like the Bloody Mary and the Blue Lagoon but also as a quintessential meet-up for the international art scene. They are now opening a new location in Cannes’ chic Port Canto.
The adventure of Harry's New York Bar, an American bar of a bygone era, began in 1911 in the Opéra district, when an antique bar from 1860 was dismantled in New York and reassembled piece by piece at the Paris location. The International bar made cocktail creations its speciality and today they have over 400 on offer! It’s also a wonderland for the whiskey lover with over 300 whiskies on hand.
Over the last century, Harry's New York Bar has been THE meeting place for Americans in Paris, but also as a hang-out for the who’s-who of the art and literary world of the golden age. At any given time, one could find celebrities like Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Antoine Blondin, Bill Tilden, Jacques Prévert, Coco Chanel, Jack Dempsey, Rita Hayworth, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Humphrey Bogart or Marcel Cerdan, who came to enjoy cocktails created especially for them.
Perhaps the best part of the Harry’s Bar story is that it is still run by the same family, since 1911. It is Franz-Arthur MacElhone, great-grandson of Harry MacElhone, founder of the famous cocktail bar, who chose Cannes to perpetuate the unique atmosphere of the illustrious bar. He describes Cannes as ‘a global village’ and says: “Cannes has a DNA very similar to that of Harry's Bar. International in reputation and human in scale, this city is without a doubt the ideal place to develop a sunny, Cuban version of our know-how. As the fourth-generation owner of Harry's Bar and as a Cannois, it is in Port Canto that I wish to continue the adventure of the oldest cocktail bar in Europe.”
The new 127 m2 Cannes location has a 150 m2 terrace on the Éspace Grand Large in Port Canto and will have a fun Cuban vibe with cocktails like Daiquiris, blended drinks and juleps to enjoy a classy apéro amongst the yachts.
Originally set to open during the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity in June 2020, the grand opening has been delayed by the Covid-19 closures but will be opening this week on 11 June, when the curfew restriction is set to 11 pm.
Don't miss this great new addition to the Côte d'Azur!
