Monte-Carlo Fashion Week Celebrates Sustainable Creativity
This year's Monte-Carlo Fashion Week will take place from 14-18 May, rewarding the world's most environmentally forward-thinking designers!
Monaco is renowned as a leader in tackling climate change, from saving the oceans to cleaning up the runway. Under The High Patronage of H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco, Monte-Carlo Fashion Week brings some of the world’s top VIPs of the fashion industry. and bestows the coveted MCFW awards in International, Italian and Ethical fashion. Since 2016, the principality has made sustainability its focal point, hosting an annual Sustainability Contest for the most environmentally forward-thinking designer.
All ‘green’ brands and independent designers are invited to enter with a short ‘representing the essence of their ethical and innovative vision.’ The winner will have their eco-friendly collection on display during the official calendar of MCFW and exposure on its website and social media. But don’t think it’s an easy way in the door… Submissions are judged by an esteemed panel of the fashion world, including Sara Sozzani Maino, Head of Vogue Talent and Deputy Director of Vogue Italia and Federica Nardoni Spinetta, President and Founder of the Chambre Monégasque de la Mode and Monte-Carlo Fashion Week.
Last year’s Sustainability Contest was won by brand Desserto for their cactus vegan leather bag. Business partners Adrian and Marte cut the mature leaves of a cactus plant to make their ‘leather’ handbags. The plant-based material causes much less harm to the environment than traditional cow’s leather, which demands an enormous amount of water throughout the process and is not biodegradable. Meanwhile, traditional faux leather is derived from fossil fuel, meaning it is not a sustainable option either. The designer duo from Mexico will also be part of this year’s judging panel.
The highlight of the week, however, is the much anticipated MCFW Fashion Awards. Each year, the Chambre Monégasque de la Mode hosts a lavish ceremony to recognise outstanding contributions to fashion. Awards are given for International, Made-in-Italy and Ethical fashion, accessories, photography and Sustainability.
The MCFW slogan #sustainabletogether is being realised across the world and Monaco's Fashion Week is giving it one of the most prestigious runways to share with the best-known names in fashion.
