What do you think of when you think of the opera? If you think of fancy-dressed aristocrats attending long, boring performances, think again. Today’s Opera house is hip, modern and innovative. The new 2021/22 season of the Opéra de Nice Côte d’Azur is jazzed up and ready to entertain us all with new programmes and events, unexpected, unusual, and delightful evenings. Of course, their incredible performances are still the top attraction, with some really fabulous shows planned this season, including the Nice Opera's own productions of 'La Veuve Joyeuse' and 'Phaéton'. And where else do we have access to such quality shows at such an attainable price? Ballets and opera performances average 20€ for adults and only 5€ for youth and students. Plus, with their Jeune Publique programme, organisers have come up with many extras to get everyone involved in the Opera.

New Programmes

Afterworks – these aperitif concerts give new life to the term ‘Happy Hour’ with live performances around a drink. A chance to join with the community, meet artistic-minded people and enjoy a post-work chill with some culture. Each Afterwork is held in an unusual location around Nice, including Cave Bianchi, Hotel Aston, Opera Plage, and L’Artistique.

From 6 October: Starts at 7 pm, tickets are 15€. For the complete schedule, visit: https://opera-nice.org/fr/saison-concerts

Performance Season

Don Quichote in December. Photo: D Jaussein.

For the fans of opera performances, this season has some truly spectacular shows, from Boieldieu’s La Dame Blanche (Jan ’22) to Offenbach’s Voyage dans la Lune (Feb ’22) and Verdi’s MacBeth (May ’22). Don Quichote will be playing just before Christmas and the much-anticipated well-received Akhnaten will return to the stage for a live audience on 12, 14 and 16 November. The special production about one of the greatest Egyptian pharaohs was originally set to premiere in 2020 but was rescheduled due to the confinement. The Opera decided to go ahead with the production as a recording and the video on YouTube was viewed by more than 115,000 people! The largest audience was in the US, where creator Philip Glass is very popular. Nice audiences can now see this production in person.

Don’t miss this weekend’s performance of ‘Entrez dans le Danse’, a beautiful performance of danse of pieces by the Ballet de Nice Méditerranée. At 9 pm on 17 & 18 Sept at the Théâtre de la Verdure. 20€ / 5€ students.
